What are the common symptoms of Breast Cancer ?
A painless lump is the most common symptom of Breast Cancer, it may also be associated with mild
pain/discomfort, nipple discharge, skin changes, in growing of nipple and a lump in the armpit. Pain comes at a later stage or in an advanced stage of Breast Cancer, this explains why the patients delay in their diagnosis. “ PAINLESS LUMP" is more dangerous than a "PAINFUL LUMP” -
Will Breast cancer happen only if their is a family history of it?
Only about 10-15 % of the diagnosed breast cancer cases have a positive
family history, rest all the cases are sporadic (can happen without a family history). -
What are the genes associated with high Breast cancer risk?
Broadly, BRCA1 & BRCA2 are the genes associated with Breast & Ovarian cancers, that can be inherited. It's referred as HBOC, or Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer syndrome

How can an individual know if they have BRCA mutations running in their family?
There are genetic tests available which can confirm the inheritance of BRCA mutations. These inheritance are commonly found if any of the following incidences are present in the family:
- Bilateral Breast Cancer
- Breast and Ovarian Cancer
- Male member suffering from Breast Cancer
- Breast cancer diagnosis at less than 50 years of age

Can Breast Cancer happen in Males?
Yes, Breast cancer can happen to males too. Though the incidence is only around, 1% of all the diagnosed cases. Hence if a male person sees a lump in his breast they should quickly get it checked.

What is mammography?
A mammography test is a low dose X-ray used to detect breast cancer and also other breast diseases. Now, we have a higher version of Mammography which is called Tomosynthesis or 3D mammography which is an advanced breast imaging technique that uses X-rays to create a three-dimensional image of the breast. It is more sensitive to detect even a smaller lesions primarily in younger patients or in patients with dense breast tissues.

Is Mammogram harmful?
The X-ray exposure with single mammogram is 0.4 m SV whereas exposure with
CT (Abdomen +pelvis) is around 10 m SV which is way higher than the Mammogram
exposure. More or less mammogram detects Breast Cancer at an early stage, and hence gives a
better chance of survival and breast conservation. -
Is Mammogram painful?
If the mammogram is done at the right time of your cycle in a right way then it just
causes a mild discomfort. Improper technique causes pain in the breast. Moreover , in the latest Tomo-mammography machines, there are breast pads on which the breast is kept and then gentle compression is given, this pad reduces the discomfort and pain significantly. -
Are all breast lump cancerous?
90% of the breast lump are non- cancerous but it is always advisable that any
kind of lump should be reported to and documented by the Breast specialists to be benign (Non-Cancerous). -
Once reported, how many days does it take to diagnose Breast Cancer?
We at our centre give priority to the suspicious breast lumps. A quick physical assessment is done . The 3D Mammography along with Tomosyntheis and Ultrasound of the breast is done. With due consent, the breast lump biospy is also taken while the patient is still on ultrasound bed. The whole process is finished within 90 minutes of the physical examination. The report of biopsy arrives by the 4th working day. By 5 th day of patient's arrival, the treatment of cancer is started.

Is Breast Cancer infectious?
Breast Cancer is NOT AT ALL infectious. The patient can stay , eat, hug and kiss their close ones without harming them in any way. Rather if the patient is undergoing chemotherapy then she may get infected, if any family members suffers from any infectious diseases

Can biopsy cause Breast cancer to grow?
No. Biopsy will not cause the cancer to grow .Rather this is an important method involved in the initial assessment of the cancer in order to know it's biology.

Is nipple discharge always related with Breast Cancer?
No, it may not always be related with Breast Cancer. Only in 10% of cases a spontateous (non induced), blood stained nipple discharge may be related with cancer.

which kind of nipple discharges are not related with cancer?
A yellow, white, watery, green coloured nipple discharges are MOSTLY due to normal physiological changes.

Is Breast cancer painful?
Breast cancer in it's initial stages are mostly painless. This is the main reason why most patient delay in showing up early. A painless lump is more dangerous than a painful one.

Which is the most common age to get Breast cancer?
Although peri and postmenopausal ( 50 years and above) age group has the higher chances but now a days many premenopausal (younger menstruating ladies) women are also getting diagnosed with it.

What are the modalities of Breast cancer treatment?
Breast Cancer is treated by Surgery , Chemotherapy, Radiotherapy and Hormonal therapy depending on the stage, type, size and biological nature of the cancer.
