Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to most of your questions

  • A painless lump is the most common symptom of Breast Cancer, it may also be associated with mild
pain/discomfort, nipple discharge, skin changes, in growing of nipple and a lump in the armpit. Pain comes at a later stage or in an advanced stage of Breast Cancer, this explains why the patients delay in their diagnosis. “ PAINLESS LUMP" is more dangerous than a "PAINFUL LUMP”

  • Only about 10-15 % of the diagnosed breast cancer cases have a positive
family history, rest all the cases are sporadic (can happen without a family history).

  • Broadly, BRCA1 & BRCA2 are the genes associated with Breast & Ovarian cancers, that can be inherited. It's referred as HBOC, or Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer syndrome

  • There are genetic tests available which can confirm the inheritance of BRCA mutations. These inheritance are commonly found if any of the following incidences are  present in the family:

    1. Bilateral Breast Cancer
    2. Breast and Ovarian Cancer
    3. Male member suffering from Breast Cancer
    4. Breast cancer  diagnosis at less than 50 years of age
  • Yes, Breast cancer can happen to males too. Though the incidence is only around, 1% of all the diagnosed cases. Hence if a male person sees a lump in his breast they should quickly get it checked.

  • A mammography test  is a low dose X-ray used to detect breast cancer and also other breast diseases. Now, we have a higher version of Mammography which is called Tomosynthesis or 3D mammography which  is an advanced breast imaging technique that uses X-rays to create a three-dimensional image of the breast. It is more sensitive to detect even a smaller lesions primarily in younger patients or in patients with dense breast tissues.

  • The X-ray exposure with single mammogram is 0.4 m SV whereas exposure with
CT (Abdomen +pelvis) is around 10 m SV which is way higher than the Mammogram
exposure. More or less mammogram detects Breast Cancer at an early stage, and hence gives a
better chance of survival and breast conservation.

  • If the mammogram is done at the right time of your cycle in a right way then it just
causes a mild discomfort. Improper technique causes pain in the breast. Moreover , in the latest Tomo-mammography machines, there are breast pads on which the breast is kept and then gentle compression is given, this pad reduces the discomfort and pain significantly.

  • 90% of the breast lump are non- cancerous but it is always advisable that any
kind of lump should be reported to and documented  by the Breast specialists to be benign (Non-Cancerous).

  • We at our centre give priority to the suspicious breast  lumps. A quick physical assessment is done . The 3D Mammography along with Tomosyntheis  and Ultrasound of the breast is done. With due consent, the breast lump biospy is also taken while the patient is still on ultrasound bed. The whole process is finished within 90 minutes of the physical examination. The report of biopsy arrives by the 4th working day. By 5 th day of patient's arrival, the treatment of cancer is started.

  • Breast Cancer is NOT AT ALL infectious. The patient can stay , eat, hug and kiss their close ones without harming them in any way. Rather if the patient is undergoing chemotherapy then she may get infected, if any family members suffers from any  infectious diseases

  • No. Biopsy will not cause the cancer to grow .Rather this is an important method involved in the initial assessment of the cancer in order to know it's biology.

  • Yes, Breast Cancer is curable until stage III. In Stage IV, metastasis to one organ (Oligometastasis), curative treatment can be attempteY

  • No, it may not always be related with Breast Cancer. Only in 10% of cases a spontateous (non induced), blood stained nipple discharge may be related with cancer.

  • A yellow, white, watery, green coloured nipple discharges are MOSTLY due to normal physiological changes.

  • Breast cancer in it's initial stages are mostly painless. This is the main reason why most patient delay in showing up early. A painless lump is more dangerous than a painful one.

  • Although peri and postmenopausal ( 50 years and above) age group has the higher chances but now a days many premenopausal  (younger menstruating ladies) women are also getting diagnosed with it.

  • Breast Cancer is treated by Surgery , Chemotherapy, Radiotherapy and Hormonal therapy depending on the stage, type, size and biological nature of the cancer.
